Responsibility for notification #
The Northern Territory Government Gazette, No G9, 2 March 2016 specifies HIV as a notifiable disease.
For the purposes of s 8 of the Notifiable Diseases Act 1981 (NT), HIV is considered a ‘schedule 4’ disease. If a medical practitioner diagnoses or considers that a person has HIV, the medical practitioner must give the information to the medical officer if the medical officer requests the information, in the manner specified by the medical officer.
For the purposes of s 16 of the Notifiable Diseases Act 1981 (NT), HIV is considered a ‘schedule 2’ disease as defined by legislative instrument in the Northen Territory. If a laboratory receives pathology results that indicate that a person has HIV, the person in charge of the laboratory must give the information required to the chief health officer in writing or by phone or facsimile (a non-urgent notification).

The notification form requires that the person’s name and birthdate must be included.
